About the elevator

The inclined elevator to Râșnov Citadel, running since July 2015.

The fastest way to the Citadel

For anyone wanting to get from the centre of Râșnov up to the citadel, the fastest way is the inclined plane elevator. The idea was born in Râșnov back in 2005, and the project was completed and handed over in April 2015. The first public rides took place on 3 July 2015, at the opening of the Râșnov Days festival.

Similar installations can be found in Salzburg (Austria), Porto and Zagreb (Croatia). The elevator in the “town of roses” can carry 648 people a day, with up to 20 people per trip. Thanks to its counterweight it uses little energy, which also makes it an eco-friendly way to travel.

The boarding station is behind the Râșnov House of Culture, and at the upper station next to the Citadel a panoramic platform lets you enjoy the views over the town. The line is 153 metres long (121 metres horizontally), with a 93-metre elevation difference between the stations and an angle of inclination of 37 degrees. The ride takes about two minutes, at a maximum operating speed of 2 metres per second.

The track runs between rocks towards the Citadel

Built into the rock

Building the elevator, a type of system often used in Austrian and Swiss mountain resorts, was an extremely difficult project because of the terrain. In hard-to-reach areas the concrete pillars were placed by helicopter, and 2,000 cubic metres of rock were broken by hand to clear the route. The investment was 10,718,447 lei, half of it non-refundable European Union funding and the rest from Râșnov’s local budget.
